Principal’s News
March is certainly living up to expectations with so many activities occurring across the school this month.
Athletics Day last week was a wonderful culmination of team work from both staff, students and parents from the high school and local primary schools. It was wonderful to see so many parents here cheering on the students, helping out with events and cooking the BBQ. To the students who filled events and put in their best effort in every event they were in, be proud of yourselves. It is very important to acknowledge the work of the staff and in particular Jordan Smith and the Sports committee for the work that went in, often unseen to ensure the day ran smoothly. The grounds were prepared to a very high standard largely due to the work of Barry Martin.
This week we have commenced grape picking of perhaps our biggest crop of grapes ever. Whilst the weather was quite warm it was certainly a good example of the whole school getting behind the day and working very hard to get the harvest in. Again there is a lot of work that has occurred behind the scenes to prepare for this week, with an amazing team of enthusiastic teachers and support staff all working together.
On Monday 23rd March the whole school will head to Jamestown for the MNSEC Athletics day and gain we are looking for enthusiasm and team work from all of our students in either participating or supporting their peers.
Only last week 8 of our students represented MNSEC at the SSSSA Swimming in Adelaide. We appreciated all of the parents who were able to attend and support the students. From what I have heard our students swam very well and did themselves proud.
In Week 5, 26 Year 8 students and four staff departed GHS for Port Augusta Aquatics Centre. With the temperature forecasted to be in the mid-20s along with a moderate breeze, it was perfect conditions for aquatics activities. Students learnt skills in canoeing, kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and windsurfing. Students were well behaved and enjoyed the activities both on the water and back at the Aquatics Centre. Part of the team bonding activities was the nomination and election of our Year 8 Student Leaders. Congratulations to Asia Brand and Max Flowers.

- “My favourite part was the catamaran because there was always something to do.”
- “Camp this year was a very educational and eventful experience. However, my favourite part of the whole three days was bonding with my peers and learning new things about them.”
- “I enjoyed windsurfing and sailing because when we were there the weather was perfect.
- “Camp was a wonderful experience and a great bonding time with friends. I loved the freedom we had, and I loved the little team games we did outside of lessons.”
- “I enjoyed the catamarans and kayaking through the mangroves.”
- “My favourite thing at camp was capsizing a boat and a canoe with my group. I think I liked capsizing because of all the adrenaline.”
- “Camp was really fun. I liked going sailing because it was challenging.”

MNSEC formal for the year 12’s is coming up on 3rd April and we are fortunate enough as a school to be hosting the event this year.
We are looking for any donations of black and white themed decorations with Gold and Silver also welcome. Decorations can be returned if desired.
If you have any decorations you are willing to donate/ lend, could you please drop these into the front office by the end of week 8 (Friday 20th March).
Canteen Fundrasing / Catering Request
Gladstone High School Canteen committee will be catering for an event on Friday 20th March from 9.30am - 1.30pm.
We are seeking volunteers to assist in the canteen and at the event from 9.30am - 1.30pm.
We are also looking for donations of the following food items to be delivered by Thursday 19th March to the front office of the school or canteen manager.

Sammy D presentation
On Monday 2 March, we were lucky enough to have Neil from the Sammy D Foundation come and deliver a powerful presentation to our Year 8, 9s and 10s. Neil spoke about his son and the impacts on those around him following his death from a one punch attack in 2008. All of our students were engaged and moved by the presentation, some comments from students included:
Neil was very brave to get up and speak, he was a really good role model.
It was really sad that his son died, just from a fight
The presentation reminded us to make the right choices.
The Sammy D Foundation educates young people on the impacts of bullying, and drug and alcohol fuelled violence. By providing relevant age appropriate knowledge and tools, young people are empowered to make positive life decisions for a better community. Celtic Rock Band CONCERT by THE BORDERERS at JAMESTOWN MEMORIAL PARK SUNDAY 29 MARCH 2020 1 – 3 pm to support Drought Appeal Sturt Patrol via Frontier Services. All families invited to enjoy this great entertainment and there will be a FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE from 12 noon!
Well, it's that time of the year again to pop the apron on and get baking to support Gladstone High School with one of its major fundraising events.
For new parents/caregivers, we hold a fundraiser at the Laura Fair selling biscuits. As we have fewer students this year your support in this event is essential to make it a success.
We would appreciate donations of biscuits or cash by Thursday 2nd April to the GHS Front Office. Biscuit quantities are to fill approximately 2x large ice cream containers (or biscuits made up of 2kg of flour). The more colourful the better but we appreciate and are grateful for any sort of biscuit.
Importantly we require people to volunteer their time for packing the biscuits on Friday 3rd April from 1.00 pm in the school hall or in the Home Ec room. Please let us know if you are available, many hands make it faster. Please bring a set of scales.
A roster for the Laura Fair Stall is now available, so be sure to put your name down quickly. Jodie is collating the roster so please send the forms in to the school or preferably ring/text Jodie on the number below to put your name on the roster. Senior students are welcome to book a spot with a parent. PLENTY OF SPOTS AVAILABLE!!
