Welcome all of our new and returning families to the 2023 school year. It has been absolutely fabulous to have all students back and to have such a smooth start to the year. Memories of week 1 last year keep reminding us how different it looked. Students have been able to engage in learning straight away and enjoy the opportunity to interact with each other in person.
We welcome a number of new staff this year with some changes to roles also. Alison Johnson is the Senior School Coordinator for 2023. We also welcome Michael Bennet- Ag and Science, Samantha Ramm – Outdoor Ed and HPE, Veronica Travers – English, HASS and Research Project, Alexandra Lloyd-Smith – Textiles and Food and Hospitality, Hannah Pech – HPE and Food and Hospitality, Celeste Kuske and Tammie Duke – Classroom SSO’s.
Excitingly, our Year 12’s have already received their jumpers and shirts and have proudly worn them from day 1. Congratulations to them on their thorough organisation at the end of last year.
Congratulations to our year 12’s last year. Mackenzie Myers was our DUX and has been accepted into Flinders University to study a Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical). All of our students who achieved an ATAR and applied to University were offered their first choices, congratulations.
The term calendar is being finalised with the dates of athletics and swimming carnivals now locked in for Gladstone, MNSEC and Adelaide. As always we look forward to having parents and community members attend these events, particularly volunteers to help with timing etc.
We have implemented the new mobile phone policy this week and I would like to commend our students on the positive manner in which they have been prepared to comply with the new policy. A reminder that if parents need to contact their child during the school day please call the school and we will pass on the message and provide them with the opportunity to use a phone in the front office if necessary.
A heads up there will be a Quiz Night in the Stadium on the 24th March organised by the Governing Council as a fundraiser for the school. More details to come out shortly.
I am looking forward to an amazing year.
Tyler Hogan - Principal
I have recently graduated from Flinders University, completing a Master of Teaching (Secondary). Prior to this, I completed a Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) in 2013. I then went on to teach English in Japan for 5 years on the JET (Japan Exchange & Teaching) Programme. I am fluent in Japanese and have an interest in Japanese culture. This year I will be teaching science, and agriculture to Year 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s. I hope to do my best to bring interest to science for all students at Gladstone HS and get to know all the students and families connected with this school.
I live in Georgetown with my four children and jack russell Herbert.
I'm very excited about teaching food and textiles this year at Gladstone High, as these are two areas I am passionate about.
While I’m new to the schooling sector I’m keen to learn and build friendships with staff and students and help them to succeed.
For the most part of the past 12+ Years, I’ve been a stay-at-home mum to my 3 children aged 6, 10 and 12 years. I returned to work in 2017 after completing my certificate in Individual Support at Mt View Homes in Booleroo Centre, and you will still find me there most weekends.
My hobbies include driving the kids to sports and working on our yard/house extension and hanging out with our 2 wolfhounds.
I’m grateful to be given the opportunity and hope to help others reach their full potential while having a laugh along the way.
I am very excited to be working at Gladstone High school this year as an SSO in the classroom.
I live in Wirrabara with my husband and 2 children.
I’m passionate about our community and enjoy being involved in various sporting clubs.
I have been a hairdresser for the past 25 years and I’m excited for change, new experiences, and challenges.
I will be at School on Mondays and Thursdays and I look forward to working with and meeting students and staff at Gladstone High School.
My name is Veronica Travers. Last year I was living and working back in my village where I was a student, at Cleve Area School. I was supporting my parents a bit but this year they have to manage without me! I loved walking slowly over the road to school.
In the 17 years before that I was working at St Mark's College in Port Pirie and I have moved back into my house in Pirie and now getting used to driving 25 minutes to work in Gladstone.
I have worked in lots of other schools in South Australia, in Victoria, New South Wales and Internationally in Cambodia. I would love to tell you about Cambodia so if you meet me feel free to ask.
I found my cat, Shadow, in my garden two years ago and I was determined that he would sleep in his bed in the laundry but somehow he has migrated to sleeping on the end of my bed.
I like cooking and baking and have been known to bake biscuits for my students. My Mum and Dad loved having me go over to their house last year and cook for them.
At Gladstone High School, I am teaching Year 9 HASS and English, Year 10 English, Year 11 Research Project and Year 11 Essential English.

Hi, my name is Samantha Ramm, I’m very excited to be a part of Gladstone High School. I completed my first year of teaching last year at Open Access in Adelaide, which is joined with school of the air. This will be my 2nd year of teaching; however, this also means I have relocated to Gladstone for this role. I have a passion for health and physical activity and look forward to teaching HPE & Outdoor Ed to share my knowledge.
My spare time consists of staying active through hikes, walks or runs with my puppy Oakley, spending time with my friends and family and travelling. I am a Crow’s supporter in the AFL and a West Adelaide supporter in the SANFL. I also currently play for West Adelaide, with our season to start in a few weeks. Some of the other sports I enjoy are basketball & tennis as I have played these since I was a child. If you see me around the yard, don’t be shy, come and say hi or one better give me some suggestions of places to go camping or hiking in the area.
Our Year 7s are settling in to their classes and Homegroup this week. They are gaining confidence in using their lockers (and locks!) and moving to different learning spaces.
Pictures below show the whole class doing some multiplicative thinking in Maths, some teamwork in PE, and one group setting up their learning goals in Performing Arts.

TERM 1 SPORT & CARNIVAL UPDATES
As we begin 2023 with all of our students in classrooms and all events on the calendar, we are excited to be able to hold house meetings and prepare for the upcoming carnivals.
GHS Swimming Carnival – Wednesday 15th Feb
Buses will drop students at the Gladstone Pool for a full-day carnival, allowing us to include Cup events, non-cup events, a range of inclusive novelty events, some free time and maybe even staff and parents in the pool!
Notes will be sent home seeking parent/family/community support for timing, canteen and BBQ. We appreciate any help you can offer throughout the day.
Please ensure that your child’s General Consent Booklet has been returned to school, as these contain the aquatics consent forms.
MNSEC Swimming and SSSA Swimming Carnivals
The MNSEC Carnival will be held on Tuesday, Feb 21 (location to be confirmed) for students selected to represent GHS. Following this, the MNSEC team will compete in the SSSA carnival in Adelaide on March 1.
GHS Athletics Carnival
Held on Friday, March 10 on the school oval, all of our PE classes are starting their practice for the full range of events! The timetable for the day will be designed to encourage participation with long-distance events being held in the week prior to the carnival.
MNSEC Athletics and SSSA Athletics Carnivals
A team will be selected to represent GHS at the MNSEC carnival at Jamestown Community School and, from there, a MNSEC team to compete in the Adelaide Carnival.
Knockout and MNSEC Sports
Processes will take place throughout the year for students to nominate for a range of knockout/statewide sports carnivals (including cricket, tennis, basketball, netball and football). GHS will also attend MNSEC sports events to give students in Years 7-10 opportunities to compete in the sports they cover as part of our PE curriculum.
All of these events will include opportunities for students to be involved in many ways and are positive ways for families and community members to engage with our schools and we look forward to sharing them with you!
Please keep an eye out for consent forms on Sentral and information notes over the coming weeks!
Kate Seidel - Middle School/Sports Coordinator
My name is Sarah and I am so happy to be a part of this beautiful school community.
I am married and I live on a farm out of Gladstone where I get to experience the country at its fullest. I spent a few years studying in the city of Melbourne so I love being out in the country and breathing the fresh air.
My role at Gladstone High is to provide compassionate and practical support to staff, students and the general school community when there are times of need. I work alongside the wellbeing team to provide appropriate care within the school and fill in the gaps where I'm needed. I'm available on a more personal level to help students through difficult times as well as on a broader level to help improve school culture through organising and implementing activities and events.
I am in the school to provide support to individuals of diverse backgrounds and beliefs and work to enable an inclusive environment for all individuals.
