Sports Report Term 2, Week 3
Welcome to Term 2 and the sporting opportunities that happen along the way! While there aren’t as many whole school events, the events with school sport have been frequent and students have had several opportunities to get out and be active in varied sporting fields. Sports are another platform for students to grow, get out of their comfort zone and integrate with others. The opportunity for growth in one’s dispositions while competing is arguably as important as the competition itself. We have been very pleased with the dispositions of those competing and participating via umpiring or coaching in the events below.
MNSEC Athletics Adelaide
During the final week of Term One, Kate Seidel accompanied a group of 9 to the SAASA Athletics day at Mile End where they represented GHS as part of the MNSEC Team. We are delighted that these students took time to represent GHS and support the MNSEC through their involvement and pride. Congratulations to: Farley O’Brien, Jasmine O’Brien, Imogen Cunningham, Hudson Seidel, Jed Griffin, Jack Brock, Taylah Palmer, Peyton Jeffries, Sienna Gaunt and Layla Harland. The effort and encouragement on the day was positively reported back to us, with two key highlights for the day.
1st Place - Imogen Cunningham, Open Girls 3000m
1st Place - Jack Brock for coming first in the U15 Boys Triple Jump.
While there was a 5am start to arrive on time for the day’s events, it sounds like it was all worthwhile. Well done for everyone who participated, encouraged and cheered!
Cross Country – Wilmington
On April 30th, Imogen Cunningham, Riley Evans and Amelia Venning participated in the Cross Country Race held at Wilmington. A great day was had by all with some excellent results:
1st Place – Open Girls, Imogen Cunningham
1st Place – U16 Girls, Amelia Venning
2nd Place U16 Boys, Riley Evans
Imogen’s time of 18.07, has her competing at the championships held at Oakbank next Month. Good luck, Imogen!
AFL 9s
Thursday, May 8th saw the year 7 and 8 Health and PE units surrounding AFL 9s come to play, as all students participated in the carnival hosted by Jamestown Community School. This was a great day. Students and staff alike returned puffed out but positive about the participation, interaction and skill development along the way.
Mrs Amey’s year 11 PE class assisted with coaching and umpiring, which was a helpful and rewarding experience for the students. It also provided them with great examples and experience to reflect on in relation to communication, leadership and managing sporting competitions from a different point of view.
Thanks to the staff and students for their teaching and support, JCS for hosting and the participating schools and students.
Interschool Bowls
On Tuesday, March 25, GHS sent two teams to Adelaide to compete in the Interschool Challenge 2025. With two affiliated bowlers captaining each team, they both had incredible success.
Team One – Daisy Coe (captain), Jed Griffin, Charlie Flavel – First Place
Team Two – Jakobe Evans (captain), Hudson Seidel, Keira Willsmore – Seventh Place.
Play offs were held for up to 19th position, showing the high entries in the competition, featuring a range of rural and regional skills. Such an impressive result!
This play off has led to an exciting announcement, with Jakobe Evans being selected for the 18 years and under state team, held in Moreton Bay Queensland in July this year! Congratulations, Jakobe! We look forward to hearing how you go!
On Monday 12th of May, Booleroo hosted the 9/10 Interschool Bowls competition, thanks to them for hosting. With teams from Orroroo, Gladstone, John Pirie and Booleroo, it was a great intersection of sites and students. GHS entered three teams and by all accounts, it was a great day for students and teachers.
Team 1 - Daisy Coe, Charlie Flavel, Jacob Rushworth. Finished third in the event!
Team 2 – Jakobe Evans, Keira Willsmore, Ebonee Nitschke
Team 3 – Duncan Clogg, Lucy Cameron, Tye Marshall.

Thanks to Amanda Bowman for her organisation and overseeing of the majority of these events, and everyone else who assists with the process. Bus drivers, finance, forms, chasing forms, parents, grounds, teachers etc. There are many jobs involved and all of the little (and big) bits done by each person contribute to making our students feel welcome, supported and for giving them the chance to participate in a wide range of sporting opportunities.
