PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Welcome to the final newsletter of the term. I would like to welcome Kathleen Hoare to the role of Principal at Gladstone High School. Kathleen comes to us from Mark Oliphant College, Adelaide. Kathleen visited yesterday and met students and staff. I will be at GHS until it the end of week one next term and look forward to working alongside Kathleen as she transitions into Gladstone.

Today is the final athletics carnival our school will be involved in this year, with our best athletes competing at the SSSSA Athletics Carnival as part of the MNSEC team. Seventeen of our students were part of the MNSEC team. Congratulations to each of them on their selection and participation.

I am pleased to report on behalf of Governing Council that the home made biscuits were again a fundraising and social success at the Folk Fair with $1500 being raised. They extend their thanks to families who supported this fundraiser either by baking biscuits, through time spent packaging biscuits or time spent on the stall or donations.

Reports were distributed yesterday afternoon. Inside the folder are instructions for booking Parent / Teachers interviews. Staff look forward to the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your student's work, progress and next steps in their learning.

Growth Mindset was the learning agenda for the Student Free day in February. Growth Mindset is the belief that hard work and persistence are important to success and that abilities are acquired. An illustration of a person with a growth mindset is Steve Jobs, the creator of Apple, who said "if you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time". In the same way star athletes are not born, but made. Important to success is targeted, intentional practice. There are a range of strategies that support staff and students to work with a focus on a growth mindset. The school's Leadership team have continued the learning for staff as part of our commitment to staff and student learning.

I attended the State Leader's conference on Monday. Professor John Hattie was the main speaker for the day. His work focuses on what he calls 'effect size'. Some things that happen in classrooms have more 'effect' on student learning than others. He spoke about the importance of relationships and trust in sustained improvement, and errors and mistakes as an important opportunity to learn. Another key message was that we need to move students beyond safe to self-challenging. His messages, based on research and theory sit well with our work on Growth Mindset.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Breakfast means 'break the fast', as the previous meal is typically 8–10 hours before waking up in the morning. Breakfast is important in re-fuelling the body with energy and nutrients, kick-starting the day. If breakfast is skipped, the result can be feeling lethargic and tired and lead to difficulty concentrating and behaviour difficulties in the school environment (Red Cross Australia).

Why is breakfast important for children? Breakfast provides children with energy and essential nutrients, including iron, calcium and vitamins B and C, which are necessary for growth, development and good health. Children who eat breakfast each day are much more likely to meet their daily nutritional requirements, as a good quality breakfast can provide a child with up to a third of their daily nutrient needs. Children who don't eat breakfast may not make up for the nutrients not consumed within the rest of the day's intake.

Children who have eaten breakfast can concentrate better and have a longer attention span, helping them to learn and study better. They can also perform better physically after eating breakfast as there is more energy available to their muscles. Breakfast can improve behaviour and mood, as children have better concentration and aren't tired or hungry.

I am looking for members of our community who are willing to volunteer a small amount of their time to help run a breakfast club. I am hoping to get this club up and running in Term 2 and would be requiring assistance 1 morning per fortnight. If you are interested in being involved, please contact the school or email me on derek.friedrichs447@schools.sa.edu.au

SACE ART EXCURSION

On the morning of 4th of April the Year 11 & 12 Visual and Creative Arts students headed to Adelaide to visit the 2016 SACE Art Show. This exhibition showcases work of students from the 2015 Year 12 Arts Students. Students viewed both the works and folios of students of the previous year to observe good examples of successful processes, products and comments. Students were tasked with reviewing artworks and folios that most interested them.

The Art Show was followed by a viewing of the Magic Object exhibition at the Samstag Museum of Art, as part of the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. The art works were all designed to look like one thing, but really be another. The exhibition had a range of pieces from sculptures incorporating different textures and materials through to the 'Wunderkammer', a screen that captures and is controlled by movement in front of it.

After lunch the Visual Arts Students went to the Art Gallery of South Australia to continue viewing the Magic Object exhibition while the Creative Arts students went to Elder Park and the surrounding areas to use the urban environment for their photography.

PORT AUGUSTA PE AQUATICS CAMP

The Stage 1 and 2 Aquatics Camp was held in Port Augusta from Wednesday to Friday of Week 9. The Stage 1 students participated in Kayaking, while the Stage 2 students participated in Sailing. Reports from students of both groups are detailed below:

From Wednesday to Friday of Week 9, 10 of the Year 11's went on a PE camp to Port Augusta Aquatics centre. Over the 3 days we learnt heaps about kayaking including; forwards and reverse paddling, sweep strokes, draw strokes, support strokes, emergency stops, rescuing, capsizing and long distance paddling. The weather was perfect and we had a great time. Thank you to Don Smallacombe and Miss Thamm for their help and Mr Martin for driving the bus.

Jenny and Taryn

Over the 3 days, 4 Year 12's did sailing. On the first day we learnt the different parts of the boat, how to rig a boat and the basic steps of sailing. We were introduced into more complex concepts on the second day such as; tacking, gybing (turning), angles of sailing, man over board and capsizes. On the third day we combined these concepts together and put it to practice around a race course. We all had a great time. Thank you to Miss Thamm and Don Smallacombe for their help and Mr Martin for driving the bus.

HEARTSINE AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR

Gladstone High School would like to inform all school families and community members of the recently purchased Automated External Defibrillator at our site and its location in the schools Front Office.

Whilst Staff recently undertook Senior First Aid training on site, the issue of accessing equipment to assist in the event of an emergency situation like a cardiac arrest was discussed and the need for Staff to be trained in the use of the defibrillator as part of Work Health and Safety development.

With the large volumes of people who visit schools there is a very real likelihood that we could face a scenario of sudden cardiac arrest, in which the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively due to a malfunction of the heart's electrical system. Often victims have no prior warning signs or symptoms. Survival from sudden cardiac arrest depends on immediate and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The use of an external defibrillator with in the first few minutes of collapse can greatly improve patients' chances of survival.

We hope the defibrillator never needs to be used at our site, but feel the addition of the defibrillator adds to our preparedness in the event of a cardiac arrest.

GLADSTONE HIGH SCHOOL WINE

Wine sales are available from the Front Office at a cost $10 per bottle or $100 per dozen.
