Principals Report

Last week it was with great excitement that we learned of the final grades for many of our Year 12 students in the Research Project. With support from Dean Humphries our students have achieved excellent results with an overwhelming majority of our students achieving an A or a B. Congratulations!

We were fortunate to also have 2 presentations to our senior students last week with the MFS Road Accident Prevention session on Tuesday and the Adelaide University Rural Health Alliance visiting on Thursday. Both of these sessions were thought provoking and resonated strongly with students. The University students spoke about the various different health degrees available as well as scholarship options for rural health students. The small number of students that opted to attend commented on how interesting and interactive the sessions was, with even more options now available to them.

Congratulations to all of our award winners at the assembly today. It was also wonderful to hear from our students involved in the show, STEM, soccer, hockey, the Biology and Careers Camp with updates for the whole school.

On Saturday our Year 9 students will depart for the slopes at Falls Creek, accompanied by Julia Murrie, Dean Humphries, Helen Gaunt, Molly O’Dea and Emma Paparella. I am sure we will be hearing about their experiences when they return and wish them a safe trip. At the same time our Year 11 students will be undertaking Work Experience, with many students in work places out of the local area. Work experience is valuable for learning about possible career paths as well as those that are no longer something to consider.

Thank you to the staff and families who have supported our students in undertaking all of the above activities.

News just in is that Sonia Pringle’s position at Risdon Park Primary School has been extended for a further 2 weeks as the Principal has extended her leave and will then retire. Luke Bartlett will remain here and continue to provide consistency for the students in Sonia’s classes.

Year 8 Excursion to Kelly Engineering

The Year 8’s have commenced a new STEM project for this semester and on Monday 30/7/2018 they toured Kelly Engineering which is the Industry partner. After a tour of their manufacturing facilities the students were able to observe the products that will form the basis of the design challenge. The first piece of equipment the students looked at was the Kelly Tillage System which consists of a diamond harrow and chains of linked discs. The discs represent the first of the design challenges that students can choose. The students can redesign the discs to try and improve them or design a new disc. Following this was the tracking trailer, which is dual axle trailer. The second challenge students can choose is to design an attachment for the trailer to make it a multi-use trailer for farmers. To conclude the tour the students looked at the design facilities.

Health News

With the cold and flu season underway now is a good time to remind everyone the best way to prevent colds and flu.

Good hygiene is one of the most important ways to help prevent colds and flu (influenza)

Other ways to help prevent flu can include:

  • annual flu vaccination
  • antiviral medicines, although these are only recommended for preventing flu if you have been exposed to the flu in the previous 48 hours

Good hygiene includes:

  • washing your hands regularly and properly with soap and water, particularly after touching your nose or mouth, and before handling food
  • sneezing and coughing into tissues then throwing them away immediately and washing your hands
  • cleaning surfaces such as your keyboard, telephone and door handles regularly to get rid of germs
  • not sharing cups, plates and cutlery
  • where you can, avoid sharing towels with other people and throw disposable tissues and paper towels in the bin immediately after using them

More information on how to prevent cold and flu can be found

Wellbeing and Engagement Collection

This week our Year 8 and 9 students have completed the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection for 2018. The survey asked students about their social and emotional wellbeing; school relationships and engagement and learning in school; and physical health and wellbeing and after school activities. Student’s answers are kept confidential, no one will use the results to identify individual students, however, the results will be a useful resource in targeting the needs of our students.
