Principal’s News

Congratulations to our MNSEC Swimming team on their achievements last Tuesday night. It was fantastic to see such a great team spirit and the support from family and friends. As a result it is rewarding to see 8 swimmers selected for the MNSEC Swimming team, competing in Adelaide next Tuesday evening. We wish our swimmers and the team all the best.

The Year 8’s left for camp yesterday and despite the very warm conditions they are having an enjoyable time on the water and also getting a chance to know their peers in a more informal setting. We look forward to a report from them ready for the next newsletter.

On Monday Daniel Seidel attended the official opening of the UniHub in Port Pirie. Five of our students attended also as participants in the Starting University Now (SUN) program. This allows students to undertake units of study through Central Queensland University giving them a head start towards a University degree. We are very excited to have students studying units from Psychology, Law and Paramedical Science. It is very exciting to be part of this new program and it provides a great opportunity for our students to start their tertiary education whilst still at school and with the support of the UniHub.

Next Friday is the school Athletics Day. We look forward to seeing parents attending and cheering on the students. It would be great to see a parent team take on the students and staff on the day. The Year 9’s are organising the BBQ with the addition of bacon and egg sandwiches and soft drinks available. This is a fundraiser to reduce the costs associated with the ski trip so please come along and support them.

A reminder Tuesday 12th March is a Student Free Day across our partnership. All staff will be involved in training called “A Framework for Understanding Poverty”. The day is being catered for by Gladstone High School so please fill in the form being sent home asking for any donations. The fundraising from an event such as this, helps to keep our canteen viable.

GHS Swimming Carnival

The Gladstone High School Swimming Carnival was held on Wednesday 13th of February at the Gladstone Swimming Pool. It was a great day with lots fun had by all. Sullivan (456) won the High School competition closely followed by Oswald (391) and Richards Gale (334). The Primary competition was a close one as well with Crystal Brook Primary (120) coming out on top of St Josephs (103), Gladstone Primary (84) and Laura (83). Max Smart set four new school swimming records on the day in events 25m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 50m Breaststroke. The main event of the day was the teacher, parent, student relay. The teachers got off to a flying start with Miss Kerr flying out the blocks. Mrs Hogan continued on from this strong start setting a blistering pace. The students were gaining quickly and the gap between the teachers and students was deteriorating with the parents not far behind either. Miss Murrie flew off the blocks and extinguished any dreams of a student come back. Thanks to all students, parents and teachers for making the day a great success.

Governing Council

It is my pleasure to have been nominated for Chairperson of the Governing Council for 2019. We have a dynamic group of people representing the parents, caregivers and the community of Gladstone High School. For 2019 we welcome three new faces to the team. Our new Vice-Chairperson Andrew Hughes, and 2 new community representatives Kim Barberien and Russell Willsmore, and we welcome back Brooke Hodgson and Jodie Zwar who have re-nominated for another two year term. Governing Council is an integral part of running a school and so we appreciate the time and energy of those who are part of the team. If you would like to be a part of our team, we have committees you may be interested in. Do you have a background in Agriculture? You could join the Agricultural Committee, or perhaps your interest lies in having a school that is vibrant and aesthetically pleasing. We have a Grounds Committee that you could be part of. Maybe you have some super fundraising ideas and are keen to support the school through raising funds to improve the quality of grounds and education at the school. You are most welcome to join our Fundraising Committee. Governing Council runs the school canteen. We have had an overwhelming response to our request for volunteers to help out, but if you are interested in learning more, you are welcome to join our Canteen Committee.

Parents and caregivers are always welcome at school events. There are often opportunities to volunteer at these events. It would be great to have a school supported by those who care about and want to improve their child’s education. If you are interested in learning how you can be a part of an exciting future, please feel free to contact a member of the Governing Council. Our members are your voice, so please don’t be silent, speak up through your representatives.

Let’s make GHS great!

Answer: Yes, your child can take medication at school. However, each child is required to have a Medication Authority Form to be completed by your child’s doctor. Forms are available from the Front Office or downloaded from

https://www.education.sa.gov.au/supporting-students/health-e-safety-and-wellbeing/health-care-plans

New Long Jump Run-ups

After a number of years in the pipeline we finally have our new long jump run-ups ready for use in the upcoming Athletics Carnival. The new artificial surface will provide competitors with a safer approach to the pit, reducing the risk of injury and increasing the opportunity for broken records. A big thank you to Barry Martin and Digger Glenn for the work they have put in making this upgrade possible.
