Principal’s News

With the end of term fast approaching it is timely to highlight a few key events coming up. Before that, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our athletes for their participation and competitiveness at MNSEC Athletics Day on Tuesday. Every athlete I spoke to or saw competing on the day ensured they represented the school well and gave it their all. A highlight for me was the Open Boys Relay at the end of the day, always great to see such determination rewarded. On a personal note I felt privileged to be able to tether for Jez in the 800m and 1500m allowing her to represent the school in these events. A very big thank you to Daniel Seidel and his Sports Committee for the work that went on behind the scenes to make the day happen, from selecting the team, organising equipment, rosters and buses.

On Thursday 4th April students will receive written reports for each of their subjects this term. Parents and students are invited to interviews with subject teachers on 9th April starting at 3.30pm to discuss student’s progress and achievement so far. We encourage as many parents as possible to meet with teachers at this time of the year, firstly to meet the teachers if you haven’t already and also so that we can all work together to support your students to achieve their best possible results.

The Laura Folk Fair is coming up quickly. This event is a major fundraiser for the school and the support of our community is crucial. If you haven’t already volunteered to make biscuits, make a donation or work on the stall please let the school know as soon as possible.

At Governing Council last week we discussed the use of our Facebook page. If you haven’t already liked our page it may be worth doing so. Many reminders, information and notices are posted regularly with councillors commenting on how easy it is to get the information out quickly.

SAASTA Workshop

This term the Year 10 South Australia Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) students have been fortunate enough to participate in two Mid-North Academy workshops located at Port Augusta. These workshops consisted of students from 8 schools located throughout the Mid North Region. The SAASTA program allows students to link sports, arts and education to their own personal culture and family heritage. The first assessment required students to design an AFL Indigenous round guernsey. The students were required to link each element of their design to their own personal, family and cultural group identities. Delira Neil’s (Gladstone High School) design was chosen as one of the two pieces of art to feature on the Mid-North Academy guernsey.

The second task that the students have been required to undergo is an aboriginal poem comparison. This task requires students to reflect on their emotions and understandings of the poems chosen. The SAASTA program has also provided students the opportunity to meet and train with Indigenous Australian Port Power (AFL) players. Students were also given the opportunity to participate in a timeline activity where each student was required to present significant events that influenced Indigenous Australians throughout history. Overall, the program has been a great success with the students attending experiencing enriching learning environments that promote social development and cultural recognition.

NEW RESOURCES IN RESOURCE CENTRE

Shipwrecked at the far end of the world in a land at war. Befriended by runaways fated to harrowing paths. In constant danger from warriors, bandits and superstitious villagers who take his blue eyes and pale skin as proof that he's a demon... Young Daniel Marlowe and his Japanese 'tomodachi', his friends, Otsu and Kenji, are about to stumble into a stomach-knotting adventure where a ferocious public test of samurai virtue and a murder investigation will collide. Their hazardous journey promises answers. The hope of being joyfully reunited, the risk of confirming loss. But the spirit world has its own part to play in their destinies, for someone -or something- waits watchfully in the ancient Forest of the Night. Suitable for Lower Secondary

It's easy to be perfect when your secrets are buried.Three girls, loyal to each other? That never happens. All the groups of three implode eventually. Two in, one out. Change. Betrayal. Again and again. But not us. I make sure of it. I make Ash and Ruby see that our power is in our three-ness. We can do what no other trio can.Together, we're strong.Thick, thin, boys, mothers, divorce, other girls, secrets, lies, all of it.I'll keep us safe. Whatever it takes.Watch me.Intoxicating and intense, lush and chilling, Love Lie Repeat is the unmissable debut novel from Catherine Greer.

The extraordinary story of Eureka is one that Australians have revisited since it happened in 1854. Why did British Army Red Coats fire on a group of miners hidden behind a crude wooden stockade? Why did soldiers from two famous British regiments attack a group of gold miners early one Sunday morning? What made the miners and their families protest and put their lives in danger?

This book brings alive life on the Victorian goldfields. It tells us about power, settlement and the growth of the colony. It tells us about rights, and what matters.

Gastroenteritis

There has been a large number of reports of students having Gastroenteritis (gastro).

The most common way gastro is transported:

  • Direct person to person
  • Airborne spread through aerosolised vomit
  • Consumption of contaminated food
  • Contact with contaminated objects

To help reduce the spread of gastro please keep your child/ren home if they are showing the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal cramps

Some symptoms may be accompanied by fever, headache and overall weakness.

For most types of gastro students should stay away from school and work until there has been no diarrhea for 24 hours.

LAURA FOLK FAIR FUNDRAISER

The time has come around quickly to begin cooking our biscuits for the Gladstone High School Biscuit Stall at the Laura Folk Fair.  The Laura Folk Fair is on next weekend and we are hoping to surpass the $1500 that we made last year to support our children at Gladstone High School. Therefore, we are asking each family to cook some biscuits (colour or shaped biscuits always look good on the trays) and drop them into the school Thursday or Friday morning next week (4th and 5th April).

We are packing the biscuits in the school hall from 1.30pm on Friday 5th April. Everyone is invited and please bring scales if you have any.

The Stall Roster is accessible via the electronic newsletter.

Thank you for your support in this big fundraiser for our school.

MNSEC Athletics

MNSEC Athletics Day was held at Jamestown Community School on a sunny 22-degree day. Gladstone high school definitely represented the value of ‘Doing Your Best’ with both Elyce Martin and Mikala Fountain stepping up to fill positions in several events.

Angus Gilby showed some great skill and determination in his efforts within the Year 9 boy’s hurdle race, coming in at 2nd place. Other impressive efforts throughout the day were Lily Bowyer breaking the girls 6/7 high jump of 1.35m with a striking score of 1.47m.

A great day shared with many impressive athletes and staff from our neighbouring schools

Results will be published in the next newsletter.
