Principal’s News

On the weekend we were delighted to be part of the Laura Folk Fair and Art Exhibition. It was a pleasure to be able to launch our 2017 Shiraz for tastings and purchase at the Opening of the Art Exhibition. Our wine making program continues to provide a fabulous opportunity for students to follow the process of wine making and maybe develop an interest in the industry for the future. A number of staff play a major part in the process and I would like to acknowledge Stephen Bosch, Kim Zohs, Dean Humphries and Meredith Kleinig for their expertise. We would also like to acknowledge the support of Stonebridge Wines. Congratulations also to Zephie Neil for her label design under the guidance of Ms McAllister. The wine was very well received and is very easy to drink. If you are interested in purchasing some please contact the school to place your order.

Over the weekend we also held our regular stall selling biscuits. It is an amazing effort by so many people to donate the quantity of biscuits that are then packaged into such a wonderful selection. Thank you to all of the volunteers for giving up their time to work on the stall, and in particular, to Kylie Sawley and Jodie Zwar for coordinating the packing and roster, it really is a mammoth task.

Earlier this week Jezaliah Hartmann-Gronemyer and Ashley Hodgson competed in the Students with Disabilities Secondary Track and Field Championships in Adelaide. Congratulations to both of these students as I understand they achieved excellent results in all of their events.

Congratulations to all of our competitors who competed at Adelaide Athletics Championships on Wednesday. It was a pleasure to accompany the students and see them compete at this level.

Thank you all of the parents and students who made it in for interviews on Tuesday afternoon. We certainly hope that these provide a chance for a collaborative approach in supporting students to reflect, modify if necessary and to achieve their best in the future.

Finally, a farewell to Julia Murrie as she departs to take on her new position in Tasmania. We wish her all the best as a new set of students benefit from her teaching skills. We will welcome Leigh Wade to the staff at the beginning of next term in Technology Studies and Science.

A reminder that school will finish an hour earlier on Friday as we finish the term. Enjoy the holidays and have a wonderful Easter.

SACE Art Excursion

On the 28th of March, Year 11/12 Visual Art students went to Adelaide to see the Ben Quilty Exhibition, the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) and the SACE Art Show at AC Arts. We learned about Ben Quilty’s art style and what inspired him to create his art. The history of Australia’s Indigenous people influence the first few pieces we saw. Ben Quilty was employed by the Australian Government to travel to Afghanistan during the war and so there were many pieces surrounding this. My favourite piece was Fairy Bower Rorshach. For this work he painted a landscape in thick oil paint and pushed another canvas against it to create a mirror image and to change how we see that landscape. Quilty doesn’t use paint brushes, he prefers to use palette knives instead. In his early works, Quilty used kitchen utensils to create his art. At the SACE Art Show, we saw many amazing pieces. My personal favourite was Eclectic World by Alex Lam. He used pen and ink and depicted an urban world on a tree with a galaxy background. He used eyes as a metaphor throughout his piece for how ‘Big Brother’ is always watching.

In response to the excursion, the Visual Arts SACE students have explored Quilty’s style of painting and have tried to replicate some of his work. He works with distinct strokes of paint and few details which was challenging but fun. Students have reflected on work from the SACE Art show and incorporated ideas for both their Folios and Practical works.

SA School Students Championship for Disability

Monday April 8th, Jez Hartmann-Gronemyer and Ashley Hodgson travelled to Adelaide to take part in the SA School Students Championship for Disability. Jez competed in high jump, discus and javelin. Ashley competed in discus, shotput, javelin and 1500m. The girls competed against a range of diverse high school students from around SA with a variety of disabilities.

Although results have not been finalised, it is known that both girls ranked either 1st or 2nd in all of their events. The girls will receive awards for their competed events once finalised and officially presented to them. All events ran smoothly, with both girls giving their best ability and ensuring they were having fun while competing. The day was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Emma Paparella for also attending.

SACE Aquatics Camp

The Year 11 and 12 SACE Aquatic Camp was held last week at the Port Augusta Aquatics Centre. Over the three days we experienced some amazing weather! The lack of wind meant that the year 12 students had to adjust their activity from sailing to kayaking. All the students showed great determination over the three days to improve their skills. A highlight of the trip was a distance paddle, where the students covered 10kms in a morning of paddling! Thanks to all parents, caregivers and students who contributed to the morning and afternoon snacks. Also, a special mention to Mrs Davis, who ensured that we were never hungry at any point during the trip!

BARRY AND KATHY MARTIN CELEBRATE THEIR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERASRY

Last Thursday the staff at GHS hosted a Morning Tea to celebrate the wonderful milestone of Barry Martin (our groundsman) and his wife Kathy’s 50th Wedding Anniversary (Golden).

Unfortunately due to Kathy’s work commitments Bazz had to cut the amazing cake himself!

The cake was made by our talented staff members Tamisha Roberts, Julia Murrie and Jackie McAllister. He was presented with a ‘special’ bouquet of flowers also made by another talented staff member – Jordan Smith.

It was a pleasure to celebrate this huge achievement with Barry.

Much respect to you and Kathy – CONGRATULATIONS!
