Principal’s News

This week is again extraordinarily busy with students on Wednesday out bushwalking and another group involved in MNSEC football. Today all students are involved with a Flinders University Presentation and on Friday Year 8 students are attending a second gymnastics workshop after Luke Bartlett was successful in obtaining a Sporting Schools Grant.

Next Tuesday we have the Year 8/9 Three Way Conferences when students lead the conversation about their learning so far this year. If parents have not yet booked a time, please do so through the Sentral Parent Portal or call the school and ask them to book you a time.

Last week three of our students were involved in the Power Cup as part of the SAASTA program. With thanks to Tyler Norton for accompanying our students, congratulations to all our SAASTA students for their outstanding academic results which contributed to their selection for the teams.

All Year 11’s and their families will receive an invitation before the end of term for the SACE Information evening which will be held on Tuesday, July 23, the first week back after the holidays. This evening is an important step in the process for selecting subjects and deciding on future pathways during and after school, so you are all encouraged to attend with your student.

With only a week to go before school holidays we wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. A reminder school finishes 1 hour earlier next Friday 5th July. Buses will run 1 hour earlier.

Principal

SAASTA Power Cup

The Gladstone High School SAASTA Class participated in the 2019 Power Cup from Wednesday, June 19 to Saturday, June 23.

This was an enriching cultural experience for the students. It allowed them to venture out of their comfort zones and share their own cultural beliefs.

The students participated in a football carnival which resulted in the Far North Academy and Christies Beach boys team progressing into and ultimately winning the 2019 SAASTA Power Cup.

In order to achieve this the students were required to achieve Excellent Academic results, a high level of attendance and engagement at school as well as winning majority of their games.

Finally, I would like to thank the students and staff for assisting and participating in the workshops and major events.

An extended thank you to SAASTA, Far North and Christies Beach staff for providing this valuable learning experience.

Tyler Norton
SAASTA Teacher

“I enjoyed meeting new people that have the same cultural values as me. I loved the different war cries and dances. The SAASTA program will help me further with my education.” Delira

“I liked the Power Cup, it gave me the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about their culture and play football with different students. I especially loved the war cry and dances. The Work Expo was great, as it gave us the opportunity to discover job options for our future. I definitely encourage more of our Aboriginal students to do SAASTA at GHS. A big bonus for me was performing a cultural dance on the Adelaide Oval.” Zephie

“I really enjoyed the football aspect of the Power Cup and meeting students from other schools. The Work Expo was great in helping with career pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The SAASTA program is helpful for us to help achieve our SACE through a culturally friendly program.” Tyrell

Student Attendance

Each day your child attends school has a positive effect on their development and future success. If your child/ren miss one day of school a week, equals 40 days per year which equates to 200 days for a student throughout their high school. Students who do not attend school regularly miss out on planned learning experience, sequence of instructions and class participation. The impact of this compounded with each absence. It may be difficult for your child/ren to build positive relationships with both staff and other students.

Student attendance has 2 categories:

  • Habitual non-attendance: a student has 5 or more absences for any reason in a term (averaging 1 day each fortnight)
  • Chronic non-attendance: a student has 10 or more absences for any reasons (average 1 day per week)

If you are having problems with your child/ren’s attendance, please contact the school to talk about any issues that may cause your child/ren not wanting to come to school.

If your child/ren is absent it is, you as the parent/guardian responsibility to contact the school either through SMS 0439 454 743 or by calling the GHS directly on 8662 2171.

Review and consultation of VET for school students

The Minister for Education has released a VET issues paper highlighting the key challenges facing delivery of VET to school students. The paper seeks feedback on how they can be addressed to maximise the benefit of VET for students, employers and the South Australian economy.

The work is being complemented by a review of career counselling and a review of costing and funding VET. All of this work will inform a VET for schools policy released later in the year.

For more information and to provide feedback visit the website below:
