Principal’s News

We are very excited to be able to announce the appointments of Tamisha Roberts, Tyler Norton and Alison Johnson as permanent teachers to Gladstone High School from 2020.

Congratulations to our 5-a-side soccer teams that competed in Booleroo Centre last week. They played extremely well in very chilly conditions with a boys’ team winning the day and the girls’ team coming second.

This week Jacqui Edge and I have been meeting with Year 10 and 11 students and their parents to discuss subject options for 2020. This is the first stage in the process of deciding what subjects we will be offering so it is crucial. We encourage any students who have not yet booked a time to contact the school and book an interview time.

Last week our Year 10’s attended the Careers Camp and next week the Year 9’s are off on the annual Ski Trip in conjunction with Jamestown Community School and Booleroo Centre District School. We wish them all the best and I am sure they will bring back lots of amazing memories. Year 11’s will also be on Work Experience next week. Again, thank you to all the local businesses that are hosting the students. Without them many of our students would be unable to find a placement.

Governing Council has approved a School Closure Day for Friday 30th August to allow students to attend the Royal Adelaide Show. This is a great chance to plan to visit the show on this day as many of our students will already be there as part of the cattle team. There will be no staff at school on this day.

Gumview Charolais Education Day- Jamestown Showgrounds

On Friday the 26th of July, 10 Students from the Year 10, 11, and 12 Agriculture classes attended the Charolais Education day. The Year 11 and 12 students focussed their learning around the led steer project currently being undertaken at the school. They attended sessions on washing, ringcraft, stall presentation, grooming and live steer assessment. The group of Year 10 students attended sessions on ram selection, wool assessment, nutrition and feeding, and visual appraisal of sheep. The day was well supported by schools across the region with approximately 150 students attending. This was an opportunity for our students to network with other schools and learn about the beef, sheep and wool industries.

Viterra Grain Visit

Year 9 students attended a short session on grain classification and assessment held at the school on Friday the 2nd of August. Students learned about nil tolerance and other contaminants of grains, visual defects, and grain commodities grown in the mid north region as well as Viterra's employment opportunities and harvest jobs.

Five-a-side Soccer

The Gladstone High School Year 8 and 9 students participated in an all-day 5-a-side soccer carnival, on Thursday 1st of August. Students travelled to Booleroo Centre District School to play all MINSEC teams throughout the day.

All students demonstrated sound teamwork and thoroughly enjoyed the day through meeting new people and learning new skills. Unfortunately, Boys Team 3 did not participate in finals for the day, where Team 1 placed third losing in the semi-finals to Gladstone Team 2. The girls in Team 4 played astonishingly well, using their teamwork and communication to make the Grand Final, however, from there losing to Jamestown 1-0. Team 2 pushed to their limits winning the boy’s competition of the day, defeating Jamestown 1-0.

The students enjoyed their time and developed their knowledge and understanding of the skills, techniques and tactics used throughout Soccer, where they will transfer their knowledge to further contexts of life.

Mr Mick's Excursion

On Wednesday of Week 1, Term 3, the Year 12 Food and Hospitality students enjoyed a tasty and up-market lunch at Mr. Mick's Kitchen in Clare. This provided the girls with direct exposure to tapas-style dining and all that it entails, and they were able to sample some delicious food in the process. The manager was kind enough to speak to us and provide the students with some tips regarding how to devise an effective tapas menu, which has been useful and inspiring in the planning of their assignment. Next, the girls will aspire to match the quality of the dishes presented during the excursion when they 'cook up a storm' tapas-style.

Knock Out Hockey

Gladstone High School competed in the Open Mixed Hockey at Clare on the 29th of July. We had a team of 6 female and 7 male students ranging from Year 9 to Year 12. Only 7 had played hockey before. Misty rain greeted us in the morning at Clare, but it fined up to be a pleasant day in the afternoon. We narrowly lost 2 nil to Clare in the first match, but players warmed up in the second match which we won 7 nil. Adam Jackson showed his skills all day and goal scorers were Joel Ambjerg-Pederson 4, Emily Samuel 1, Adam Jackson 1 and Dylan Davenport 1. Thanks to all our players including Emily Smart, Chelsea Chapman-McInerney, Elyce Malycha, Teneal Malycha, Bree Matthews, Nic Palmer, Jake Couzner and Mackenzie Meaney. Special thanks to Dylan Davenport and Bodi Freer for putting on the Goalie Gear.

Year 10 Careers Camp

On Tuesday of Week 2, 26 Year 10's and 4 staff members made the trip to Adelaide for the Careers Camp. We spent 4 days in Adelaide where the students had the opportunity to master the art of public transport and investigate a range of career and study options that they could pursue. Students visited a range of educational institutions and businesses, some of which included Adelaide University, Tonsley TAFE, Media Makeup, the Academy of Interactive Entertainment, the Art Gallery and SACA. They were able to tour campuses and speak to experts in a range of different job fields. Some of the highlights included students creating their own video game setting, seeing the tooth vending machine at Adelaide Uni's School of Dentistry, and a trip to the Zoo. Although many arrived at the camp daunted by the prospect of being in a crowded Adelaide and having to sit next to strangers on public transport, they left more confident and comfortable with the lifestyle. Despite all the walking involved, the students took a lot away from the experience and were made aware of the many options available that they hadn't even thought of. They all enjoyed their time away but were ready for a decent night's sleep by the time we returned. I would like to thank Mr. Seidel, Miss McAllister and Emma Paparella for assisting with the camp.

Students visited the Art Gallery of South Australia to hear about careers including marketing, administration, and curating. They were welcomed with generous bowls of Menz Fruchocs at OMD Media and learnt about media and marketing including creative and analytic roles before being gifted. Media Makeup provided transformations of students to a wrinkly-old lady and a bruised and discoloured man whilst discussing careers within the beauty and theatre industries. At the Adelaide Festival we learnt of roles including education officers, security, cleaners, technicians (lighting and sound), orchestra, and stage assistants.

NUKUNU

Did you know that Gladstone is on Nukunu Land!

Nukunu land is situated in the Upper Eastern Spencer Gulf of South Australia. It encompasses the Southern Flinders Ranges and the Willochra Plains to the east. Major cities within this region include Port Augusta and Port Pirie with the small townships of Quorn, Crystal Brook, Gladstone, Wilmington, Melrose and Jamestown.

The Southern Flinders Ranges, and particularly Mount Remarkable form the heart of Nukunu country. Mount Remarkable lies within the area of the Nukunu Aboriginal Tribe. The Nukunu name for the mountain was Wangyarra - ’arra’ meaning running water.

Kawi is the Nukunu word for water and the Nukunu people hope that all will support in protecting this most vital asset and land, ocean, fauna and flora of the Southern Flinders Ranges and Spencer Gulf.

Of great importance to the Nukunu people is the ancestor Wapma, the large carpet snake, responsible for the forming of the Southern Flinders Ranges, the plains, parts of the coast, the creeks and waterholes.

The Nukunu people refer to themselves as “the snake people “. Artist Jessica Turner has illustrated the dreamtime story of the serpent and its role in the farming aspects of the landscape in the mural below.

MNSEC Formal

Friday, Week 1 our Year 12 students were invited to the MNSEC Formal at Quorn. They were all dressed to impress, though not necessarily prepared for an outback winter event. The initial awkwardness at the prospect of socialising with opposition netball clubs was soon replaced with dancing and singing (quality unknown), with new friendships made. Based on the silence on the bus trip home they all had an exhausting but enjoyable night.

National Science Week

Now in its 22nd year, National Science Week celebrates science and showcases scientists highlighting the ways their work impacts our everyday lives. It also seeks to inspire young people to consider a career in science.

The theme for this year’s National Science Week is Destination Moon: more missions, more science, which looks to the past to explore how big picture thinking in science solved seemingly impossible problems in space programs, operations and missions, and how it will help to forge future paths.
