Principal’s News
Welcome back to the last term of 2019. The year is certainly disappearing very fast as the Year 12’s have commented on numerous occasions. Our Year 12’s will finish the last of the formal lessons next Thursday and will celebrate this with the traditional breakfast at school on Friday. Many of them will still have lessons to come to as they finish off the last of their assignments and tasks, with many also revising in preparation for their exams. We wish them all the very best and look forward to acknowledging their achievements later in the year.
During the holidays our two Student Leaders Lachlan Hansen and Sophie Crouch visited Government House and were introduced to the Governor as part of the Governor’s Reception for Year 12 Student Leaders. By all accounts this was quite a special occasion and they were very impressed with the tour of Government House.
We also had 4 students and Daniel Seidel participate in a Projects Abroad experience to Cambodia at the end of last term and for the first week of the holidays. I commend the students and Daniel for being part of this trip and hope you enjoyed reading about their adventures through the Facebook page and in this newsletter.
Friday 15th November will be a Student Free Day with all staff contributing to the Site Improvement Plan review and analysing data to plan for 2020.

Projects Abroad
On the 21st of September Mr Seidel, Shakira Spencer, Ellen Crisp, Ella Flowers and Jessie Harslett travelled to Cambodia with Projects Abroad, which is an organisation made for volunteering in countries that are in need of assistance. We took part in teaching the children English in the mornings of the placement days and painting the school in the afternoons. The trip also involved looking at numerous temples on our weekend in Siem Reap and discovering more about the culture and history of Cambodia during our trip to the killing fields. It was an experience we will always be grateful for and use the knowledge we learnt in Cambodia in the future and continue to spread awareness of the changes that still need to be made in Cambodia and countries in similar circumstances.

Fast 5 Netball
On September the 18th Gladstone High School hosted the Year 10 MNSEC Fast 5 Netball tournament. In Fast 5 netball the court is slightly modified with an extra goal circle. The WD and WA are also taken out of each team. An example of the court is below. Teams were entered from Peterborough, Jamestown and Booleroo. The tournament was a great opportunity for students to not only show off their netball skills, but also took on roles as umpires, scorers and timers. There was some high-quality netball played throughout the day with all players showing great sportsmanship. Thanks to Ella Flowers and Madeline Hansen for helping with umpiring on the day, Deb Davis and Barry Martin for cooking the BBQ.

Fun Run
The Fun Run was conducted once again on the last day of Term 2. Students and teachers caught buses to Hughes Gap in Beetaloo Valley where we set off for a walk along the Heysen Trail to Bowman’s Park. Students were entertained by the challenges set by Mr Smith including the death-defying rope swing between trees. The weather was ideal, and we enjoyed activities at Bowman’s Park such as Tug of War and the final of the student run soccer tournament. The day was enjoyed by all and the BBQ was ably cooked by Mr Martin and Mr Zohs.

Staff Achievement
Stephen Bosch has been studying a Master’s in Education for the past 3 years which is a post graduate qualification including working more effectively together through networking, issues in numeracy and professional development for mathematics teachers, research methodology and a project which was based on middle school methodology. It was hard work and Stephen had to study for an extra 5-10 hours a week, after he had finished his normal schoolwork. Stephen studied this over 3 years and feels it has helped him better teach the students in his classes and help the new teachers at our school. Stephen received his parchment during the October Holidays. Congratulations Stephen.
