FEEDBACK – SO WHAT?
Everyone wants to know that they are doing a good job, that they are on the right track or even excelling at whatever it is they do.
Is this what feedback is all about? The answer is quite simply – no! Feedback should be about affirming what is going well but perhaps more importantly, feedback provides a structured opportunity to discuss the gaps.
It is not enough to know that we are good at something; this does not help you improve. In fact many studies suggest that too much praise may in fact discourage growth. The best way to encourage growth or improvement is to provide feedback that has three distinct aspects:
- What is working well
- What is missing
- What is not working well
When feedback covers these three areas we have the capacity to improve our practice. This applies not only to the workplace but to learning as well. Students need to know where the gaps are in their learning to improve. Giving a 'B' grade and feedback that says 'Great Work' is not useful. What students require is information on what they need to add to the 'B' level work to achieve an 'A' grade – they need teachers to tell them what the gaps are.
Teachers and schools also require this feedback. This is why we ask that parents and students complete the annual School Survey. Your feedback is incredibly important to our ongoing development and growth as a school. We need your input to help the learning grow for your children. Please take the time to complete the parent survey online by following the link below
https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/gcEUvuxa/LogIn
Access Code: sDZZA622
Students will be surveyed in class time by their teachers over the next week and again your support in discussing the importance of this feedback with your child would be highly appreciated.
Working together is the best way to improve educational outcomes for the Gladstone High School community.

ATTENDANCE
Thank you to all the parents who are continuing to support our attendance processes by replying to SMS alerts and phoning in when students are away.
Knowing the reason why students are away is important, however, it doesn't alter the fact that they are away!

The important part of any attendance conversation is that EVERY SCHOOL DAY COUNTS and that EVERY DAY QUICKLY ADDS UP!
WE REMEMBER
Last week we recognised the contribution of the men and women of the defence forces by attending the very moving exhibition – Spirit of ANZAC in Port Augusta and the Remembrance Service in Gladstone on Friday November 11.
The importance of service and sacrifice are traits that we wish our young people to recognise and honour and involvement in these two events has certainly boosted the understanding and perhaps more importantly the empathy of our students. All people are able to build better connections with information or others when they can find relevance to their own circumstances and the personalisation of the ANZAC soldiers certainly created this connection for our students. After attending the Spirit of ANZAC Exhibition it was clear the service in Gladstone on Remembrance Day held greater significance and meaning.
I would like to thank the RSL and Legacy organisations for continuing to include us in these important cultural events.

TAG RUGBY – TEAM REPORTS
On Wednesday 2nd November the Year 8 and 9 boys and girls
went to Jamestown to participate in the MNSEC Tag Rugby Carnival run by
Rugby League SA. The day was great with two of our four teams winning a
trophy. My team Gladstone Girls 1, had a great day with lots of wins, a
draw and a few loses. However we didn't make it to the Grand Final but we
still enjoyed the day and learnt new things. The Carnival was a great way
to meet new people and make new friends.

On Wednesday the 2nd of November, the Year 8 and 9
classes participated in 9-a-side Rugby. Our team consisted of Maggie,
Hannah, Ali, Tahlia, Teneal, Rachael, Georga, Bree, Taylor, Annabel, Elyce
and Emily. The day consisted of the minor round and finals. Throughout the
minor round we played 3 games, winning 2 out of the 3. Winning the first
game 3-5 against Quorn, we also won the second game 5 - NIL against
Jamestown, our final game in the minor round was 1-1 against Booleroo Team
2. We continued into the finals, winning the qualifying final 2-1 to make
it into the Grand Final. We won the Grand Final 1- NIL against Booleroo
Team 1. We all enjoyed the day very much, we'd like to thank Jamestown
Community School for hosting the event and finally a massive thank you to
the NRL guys who came over and hosted the day for us.

On Wednesday 2nd November Gladstone Year 8's and 9's went
to Jamestown to play Tag Rugby.
There were 2 boys and 2 girls' teams which were mixed Year 8's and 9's.
Gladstone 1 (pink) and Gladstone 2 (green).
Gladstone 1 firstly played Booleroo 1 and it was a draw 2 – 2. Then
Gladstone 1 played Burra and lost 2 -6.
In the finals Gladstone 1 and 2 played and the score was 3 -0 Gladstone 2
won.
Gladstone 1 ended up playing against Booleroo 2 and won 4 -1.
It was a nice day to be playing Tag Rugby.
By Mackenzie Meaney
The Gladstone Team 2 boy's day started with a win, after
beating Booleroo 2, 2-1. We tried our hardest and it paid off! The next 2
games however didn't quite go to plan, after suffering losses to
Orroroo/Peterborough 5 - 1 and Jamestown 5 - 2. The next game was a cracker
though with the score going 1 for 1, it was time that helped us beat Quorn
4-3 in a thrilling game, and send us through to the finals! The first
finals match however, turned out to be against the other Gladstone team!
Although the score may not show it, we pushed through and got the win 3 - 1
against the other Gladstone team! This meant we were playing in the final
game of the day. Battling out for 3rd place, we came up against our old
rivals Quorn! Winning another thrilling match 4 - 3 this meant Gladstone
Team 2 had earned themselves third place in the division 1 category.

BUSHFIRES AND YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL OR PRESCHOOL
Parents are encouraged to access a new brochure which provides important information about what our schools/preschools will do on a catastrophic fire day or in the event of a fire.
Bushfires can occur at any time during summer. It's important that our families understand our Site Emergency Plan and are prepared and have a plan in place for their family when these situations arise.
If there is a bushfire emergency while children are onsite we will keep them safe until the danger has cleared even if this is outside of normal school hours.
A copy for each family has been sent home with the youngest child attending GHS on Thursday 10th November.
PE WITH PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Stage 1 Physical Education students recently invited the Year 3, 4, 5 students from Gladstone Primary School to participate in three, thirty minute coaching sessions in the stadium. They taught the primary school students skills relating to basketball, soccer and tennis. They began with a warm up game of line chasey, which the students thoroughly enjoyed. The primary school students commented that they had a lot of fun, enjoying their time with the Stage 1 students. Each coaching session was spent learning particular skills in each sport.
During the basketball session, students were learning how
to perform a successful layup. This was done by breaking down the skill
into shooting techniques, dribbling and performing layups. An activity such
as "Musical Basketball" was played to ensure the day was fun as well as
educational. The students seemed to enjoy doing something different to what
they would usually do at school and it was good to see their enthusiasm and
excitement for the lessons.
By Taryn Kelly
Soccer was held outside on the oval focusing on dribbling
techniques. Three drills were used to practise the skill of dribbling
before beginning a fun game of "What's the time Mr Wolf" which was the
highlight of the lesson. All the kids participated and learnt valuable
skills about soccer as well as having lots of fun.
By Hayley Jackson
The tennis session was played on the outside courts,
concentrating on the return of serve. The students began learning the
forehand and backhand strokes. The most enjoyable activities played during
this session were the relay race and around the world. The children
successfully learnt the return of serve while at the same time having fun
through playing individual and team games.

YEAR 11 COMMUNITY STUDIES
As part of the Year 11 Community Studies, students were required to develop a contract for a community activity. This involved learning new skills and expanding on skills already had, including the development of literacy and numeracy. Robert Nash chose to combine his culture with his passion for football and paint Aboriginal dots onto a Sherwin football. Over a period of a month, every Tuesday Robert worked diligently with myself to design and paint his artwork. Robert has shown incredible growth in his learning and the final results are amazing as you can see from the pictures below.
